Hannah Wilke American, 1940-1993
Biography
Hannah Wilke (1940-1993) was a feminist artist and educator who explored the concepts of identity, femininity, relationships and sexuality through various forms of media such as photography, sculpture and drawing. She often used unconventional materials such as chewing gum and her own body as a form of self-exploration with a raw and personal perspective. She portrayed herself as a subject from times of health and also throughout her suffering from terminal cancer. Wilke challenged and reshaped female representation in the art world while creating work that is provocative, emotional, and full of power.
