Overview
It is an important part of our mission to find interesting but overlooked female artists to showcase for your enjoyment. Artist Doris Vlasek-Hails dedicated her life to art. She graduated from the prestigious art school, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago which counts Georgia O'Keeffe, Joan Mitchell and Elizabeth Murray as its alumni. She taught at the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, owned an art gallery, wrote reviews for art publications, mentored artists as well as worked on building her own art career. Her modernist abstract work is expressive and contemporary and we are fortunate to present these works for your viewing and purchase.
Doris Vlasek-Hails (1938-2004) was born in Chicago in 1938 and received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She moved from Chicago to Indianapolis and became a professor of art at the John Herron Art Institute. She was an art gallerist, teacher, writer and artist.
Vlasek-Hails had several shows in Indianapolis (1950s-1990s) including at the Indianapolis State Museum and the Herron Art Institute, as well as participating in exhibitions in Los Angeles and Paris. Her abstract work is rooted in Russian Avant Garde art movement, Suprematism and Geometric Abstraction. She worked in many mediums, including oil, acrylic, collage and ceramic. She passed away in 2004 just shy of the age of 66.
