Calibration: Audrey An, Raina Lee, Cathy Lu, and Danyang Song
We are thrilled to present "Calibration," a group exhibition that combines the nuances of ceramic with the precision of 3D printing technology. This exhibition features four artists who are showing with us for the first time - Audrey An, Raina Lee, Cathy Lu, and Danyang Song.
The titled, "Calibration," holds a dual connotation – a term common in both the 3D printing world and in everyday vernacular. We wanted this show to be about the new and exciting in ceramic especially in the area where technology is involved, so that the audience could calibrate their mind to look at ceramic in a whole new light.

LaiSun Keane is delighted to announce group exhibition titled "Calibration," featuring the ceramic works of Audrey An, Raina Lee, Cathy Lu, and Danyang (Anna) Song. This exhibition will run from May 24th to July 7th, 2024 with an Opening Reception on June 7th and an Artist Talk on June 8th.
"Calibration" is an exhibition that combines the nuances of ceramics with the precision of 3D printing technology. The exhibition's title carries a dual connotation that resonates with both the world of 3D printing and everyday language. With a focus on the exciting intersections of technology and ceramics, this exhibition invites viewers to recalibrate their perception of ceramics and discover new possibilities. Although majority of the pieces were created using 3D printing and mould making technology, the unique qualities in each work carry the maker's mark, clearly evident in the glazing, manipulation of colors, and firing process.
Metaphorically, combining technology and craft in the practice for these artists, who are either immigrants, or children of immigrants from East Asian countries, represents the constant demand to "switch code" and learn multiple languages in order to fit in, and at the same time carving out a space that they can belong.
Audrey An's art revolves around the application of digital technologies to ceramics, embracing the concept of convergence in cultural, technological, and interdisciplinary realms. An describes her fluid movement between technologies and languages as a form of “Code Switching”. An’s educational background, includes a BFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and an MFA from Penn State University, Audrey is currently the 2022-24 Artist-In-Residence at the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard.
Raina Lee, a second-generation Taiwanese-American artist and writer based in Los Angeles, brings forth her unique artistic practice that engages classical ceramics and painting. Employing custom ceramic glazes, Lee creates painterly compositions with vivid colors, volcanic textures, and crackly finishes. Drawing influence from video games, science fiction futurism, and her Southern California immigrant upbringing, Raina Lee's work has garnered international recognition and has been featured in publications such as The New York Times: T Magazine, Surface Magazine, and MilK Decoration.
Cathy Lu's ceramics-based practice explores traditional Chinese art imagery and presentation as a means to delve into the complexities of immigration, cultural hybridity, and cultural assimilation within the American identity. With an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA & BFA from Tufts University, Lu has participated in various prestigious artist-in-residence programs and exhibited her work at renowned galleries such as Johansson Projects, Aggregate Space, Jessica Silverman Gallery, and the Chinese Culture Center SF.
Danyang (Anna) Song brings her point of view, with a rich artistic journey that spans continents. With a BFA from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and an MFA in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, Song’s artworks have been showcased in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including the RISD Museum, The Blanc Gallery in New York, and the Kathryn Schultz Gallery in Boston. Notably, her works have been added to the collection at Tsinghua University, and she has received several awards, including the NCECA 2024 Multicultural Fellowship and the Craftsmanship Innovation Award at The 1st Dehua Chinese Traditional Ceramic Biennial.
This exhibition is open and free to the public.
